Romantic Venice:
Venice, Italy is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The city is an engineering marvel as it is built completely on ancient posts that were driven deep into the mud banks. The Venetians are a people with a brave heart. Imagine having the water from the canals come right up to your doorstep during high tide. The city is achingly beautiful with wonderful architecture and mind-blowing ancient masterpieces hanging on those beautiful walls.
Do not expect the city to be empty through as thousands of people visit the city all through the year. If you are a tourist, follow this simple itinerary for a wonderful romantic vacation in the city of your dreams.
HOW TO REACH THE CITY: The best international airport is the Marco Polo airport located on the mainland. From the airport, there is a direct city bus and a shuttle service that will take you into the city. Tourists can also use Treviso Airport located near the city. The airport is connected to the city by the Barzi bus service costing about thirteen euros for a round trip. If you are traveling from the mainland, then using the Venezia Santa Lucia train station is ideal. While traveling inside the water-bound city water taxis are available to carry passengers to their hotels or destinations inside the city. Once you reach the city, walking is the best way to get about. The city has great facilities for pedestrians with clear signs that indicate most tourist venues. You could also use the water buses or vaporetti for traveling. This option is relatively inexpensive, costing about 6 euros for a single trip. You can also get a day travel card for about 19 euros. Frankly, it is well worth it just to enjoy the water taxi and vaporetti experience. When you are searching for a particular address, please note though that everything is labeled according to districts. You will need to know the district number before you can reach anywhere in the city.
MUST SEE: This romantic city is filled with a huge range of wonderful buildings. However, they do charge a minimal entry fee. If you have a list of churches that you would like to see, make sure that you purchase the churche pass that allows unlimited entry to as many heritage churches as possible. Most visit venues include the all impressive St. Marks Square and Basilica or Basilica di San Marco located in the Piazza San Marco, the San Giovanni e Paolo or the San Zanipolo that is a Dominican Church with wonderful period tombs, and the Santa Maria dei Miracoli. Other must-visit venues include the Doge' Palace, sometimes known as "The Wedding Cake", "The Tablecloth", or "The Pink House" which has its own guided tour. The style is called Venetian Gothic, which is a fusion of Italian Gothic with an Islamic flair. The palace was originally built in the 800s, but most of what we now see came after the 1300s.
EVENTS: The city literally never sleeps. Art exhibitions, craft fairs, punk rock and classical music fetes are held all year round. One of the most popular events is the Voga Longa where marathoners from all over the world come in to compete for the 3.5 hour race or to just get a certificate of participation. Events do change though, so check the local city events calendar to be updated about the latest events.
SHOPPING: Venice is always packed with wonderful stores that are open all year round. Murano glass is native to the island of Murano, located just off the shore of Venice, but Venice stores do carry a large variety of glass artworks that you can purchase inside the city itself.
The best time to move about the city is in the afternoons. It is an ideal time to view the city and its impressive architecture. Beautiful piazzas with small cafes have the best food, drinks and live entertainment that is difficult to beat. Venice rocks simply because the city combines beauty and modernity with an all embracing way of life. Truly romantic in every aspect.
